SEPANG: Bersama saw a sharp increase in membership applications following the Negeri Sembilan election, which Pakatan Harapan (PH) lost to the Barisan Nasional-Perikatan Nasional alliance.
Party leader Rafizi Ramli said Bersama now has about 29,200 members, and most of its new members had no previous affiliation with any political party.
Rafizi said 60% of Bersama members had never joined a political party before, and this group continued to account for most of the party’s daily membership applications.
“After PH’s defeat in the Negeri Sembilan election on Aug 1, we did see a sharp increase in applications to become Bersama members.
“As of last week, 25% (of Bersama’s members) were former PKR members,” he told a press conference at Bersama’s headquarters in Taman Putra Perdana, Puchong, here today.
The former Pandan MP said the remaining 15% of Bersama’s members came from other parties, predominantly Malay-based outfits.
“That means former Umno, PAS, Bersatu, Pejuang and Amanah members,” he added.
Rafizi said former DAP members made up less than 1% of Bersama’s membership.
Asked whether more MPs would follow PKR’s former Subang MP Wong Chen in joining Bersama, Rafizi said he could not speak for them.
Wong joined Bersama today after quitting PKR, and two days after resigning as Subang MP. The former three-term MP had spent 17 years with the party.
Rafizi also announced that Bersama would hold its party elections within the next six to seven months, once amendments to its constitution are made.
