KUALA LUMPUR: The three family members who were killed early this morning after being struck by an immigration department Black Maria truck on Jalan Sultan Ismail here were on holiday in the capital city.
Kuala Lumpur traffic investigation and enforcement department chief Zamzuri Isa said the victims were from Kampar, Perak.
He said the 55-year-old wife of the male victim who died in the crash is currently in critical condition at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
Police are obtaining remand orders for the drivers of the truck and the Proton Saga also involved in the crash.
Grieving family members had gathered at Kuala Lumpur Hospital by midday. It is understood that the couple had another child who did not join them on the trip to the city.
The crash occurred around 1am at the Maju Junction traffic light on Jalan Sultan Ismail, as the immigration truck was heading to the Chow Kit area for an operation to detain undocumented migrants.
The truck, driven by a 43-year-old immigration officer, had its beacon and siren on as it entered the intersection while the traffic light in its direction was red.
The Proton Saga, which was going straight, failed to avoid the truck and crashed into it. This resulted in the truck losing control and crashing into the family.
The 53-year-old man and his two daughters, aged 25 and 12, were killed at the scene.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless driving.
