PETALING JAYA: An operator of an unauthorised parking business who assaulted a member of the Seputeh Residents’ Representative Council was today sentenced to six weeks in jail, Teresa Kok said tonight.
In a statement, the Seputeh MP said the man was charged with criminal intimidation and voluntarily causing hurt at the magistrates’ court.
“I would like to thank the police for their swift action,” she said, referring to the arrests of those involved in the incident.
On Sunday, police nabbed three men following a scuffle linked to the alleged unauthorised parking business at a vacant lot beside the OUG Community Hall in Jalan Awan Besar, Kuala Lumpur.
City police chief Fadil Marsus said a woman filed a report after one of the suspects allegedly berated her with abusive language, punched her in the head and threatened further assault.
The suspect also threatened to cause trouble at her workplace.
All three men, aged between 20 and 26, have criminal records.
Tonight, Kok said that based on comments left on her social media pages, the unauthorised collection of parking fees on government land seemed to be a widespread problem.
She urged Fadil to work closely with the Kuala Lumpur mayor to bust such syndicates in the capital.
“The authorities must implement stronger and more coordinated enforcement measures to ensure the safety of drivers, so they are no longer threatened or extorted by gangsters.”
