PETALING JAYA: A former Umno leader has slammed Barisan Nasional for remaining in the unity government despite forging ties with Perikatan Nasional, saying the Umno-led coalition is only angling to continue backstabbing its partners.
Puad Zarkashi rubbished Umno Supreme Council member Ahmad Maslan’s claim that BN had not pulled the plug on the federal government for the sake of political stability, dismissing this as hypocritical.
“If BN wants stability then why partner with PN in the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections? There were too many attacks on the federal government on the campaign trail during both state polls.
“The warmth (between BN and Pakatan Harapan leaders) in the Cabinet is merely a Hollywood act. BN will continue to backstab in the Melaka state election and then in the 16th general election.
“One reason they do not want to ‘pull the plug’ is because, without power, it is difficult to execute an effective backstab,” the former Rengit assemblyman who quit Umno in June, said in a Facebook post.
This comes after Ahmad defended BN’s state election pacts with PN by arguing that tactical moves to maximise election chances should not be viewed as a betrayal.
The deputy works minister reiterated that BN and PH’s agreement in the unity government was limited to the federal level, and there were no binding agreements on state-level arrangements.
