ISLAMABAD: An Australian district court jury has found a former bishop guilty of sex offenses against young Aboriginal men, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported, citing local media reports on Thursday.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that Christopher Alan Saunders, 76, a former bishop of Broome, stood trial on charges of sexually abusing three young men when he was bishop of a remote area of Western Australia more than three times the size of England.
At the peak of his powers, he was one of the most senior and long-serving Catholic clerics in the country.
After a trial that lasted more than three weeks, the jury found him guilty of abusing two of those men.
Saunders was convicted of one count of sexual penetration and 12 counts of indecent assault.
He was found not guilty of six other charges.
The victims were from the Kimberley region, where Indigenous people make up more than 40% of the population.
