PETALING JAYA: A 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit northern Sumatra, Indonesia, at 6.54pm today, according to the Malaysian meteorological department (MetMalaysia).
Bernama reported MetMalaysia as saying that while tremors were felt along parts of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, there was no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
According to Reuters, Indonesia’s meteorology agency, BMKG, said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 168km, with its epicentre located on land about 11km southeast of Simalungun.
The earthquake came hours after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Flores Island in eastern Indonesia, followed by two strong aftershocks measuring 5.6 and 5.9, which killed at least 38 people.
The Penang fire and rescue department said several reports of tremors came in from around the state between 7.23pm and 7.27pm and teams were dispatched to the various locations to monitor the situation.
In a statement, it said tremors were reportedly felt in the Barat Daya and Timur Laut districts, as well as in Seberang Perai.
