PETALING JAYA: Former national footballer Dzulkifli Ali died today at Seberang Jaya Hospital from heart and intestinal complications.
His daughter, Nor Amylia, 32, said Dzulkifli, 65, died at about 12.30pm after receiving treatment at the hospital for three days, reported Bernama.
Dzulkifli was a key defender for Penang in the 1980s. He was among the players who made their mark at both state and national level in what was regarded as one of the golden eras of Malaysian football.
He was known as a tough and aggressive defender who could play at right-back or in central defence.
Dzulkifli was also part of the national team that faced several world football stars, including Northern Ireland legend George Best and England great Kevin Keegan, in 1984.
He remained involved in the sport after retiring from competitive football, taking part in friendly matches and national veterans’ tournaments alongside former teammates.
Penang Malay Football Ex-Players Association secretary Mahathir Jamal Mohamad said Dzulkifli’s death was a major loss to his family, friends and the Penang football community.
“His service and contributions will always be cherished and remembered,” he said.
Dzulkifli was buried at the Bagan Jermal Islamic cemetery in Butterworth after Asr prayers today.
