PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has successfully undergone an elective laparoscopic surgery to treat an abdominal hernia.

In a statement today, Anwar’s medical team said the procedure was carried out smoothly under the supervision of a team of medical specialists.

“He is currently undergoing physiotherapy and remains under the supervision of the medical specialist team to ensure a smooth recovery,” said team leader Dr Asri Ranga Abdullah Ramaiah.

Anwar, who turned 79 today, has a history of shoulder and back problems.

He was hospitalised for shoulder and back pain in 2018 and called off a trip to Pahang last November after back pain that limited his movement.

Anwar was given a clean bill of health after undergoing a routine check-up at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang in January.
